Start by painting a single cel

A cel is finished by painting on the reverse side of a clear sheet. Three tools are enough to start. At a workshop you can come empty-handed.

Cel painting experience

A workshop where you can try finishing (painting) and camera work, two of the animation techniques of the time.

Pick a cut

Take the animation drawing, color callouts and pre-traced cel out of the cut bag.

Paint the reverse

Turn the cel over and brush on Anime Color following the color callouts. The simple white-only painting course takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Let it dry

Wait about 1-2 hours for the paint to dry. If you are short on time, we can mail it within Japan.

Lay it over a background

Lay it over a background to check the result, then take it home as your artwork.

Venue: Varies by session (Shibuya shop, off-site, etc.)
What to bring: Nothing. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty
Age: Anyone. Elementary school age and under must be with a guardian
Language: Held in Japanese. Ask about foreign-language support when booking

We record Japanese-made cel paints, and the color design of works that used them, as high-resolution digital data. We also think about how to convey animation colors accurately in the age of computer coloring.
